Hang Time Goes Mobile! - A celebration of American History and Education

Hang Time Goes Mobile!

Based on the overwhelming positive response by Hang Time participants to the recent educational & historic trips to the Nation’s Capital on October 28th and NYC Freedom Tower on December 9th, we would like to announce that Hang Time will go mobile on a quarterly basis. This unique approach is simple yet incredibly impactful. We choose to explore topics often not taught in public schools or offered in corrections facilities. On the last Tuesday of the month Hang Time participants will get history lessons of specific landmarks or artifacts within the United States. On that Saturday (four days later), those same participants will load onto a bus from Bridgeport and travel to the same location they just learned about days earlier. Often, the history lesson will be delivered by experts on the specific topics.

Hang Time seeks to provide educational opportunities that most Bridgeport residents of Hang Time might not otherwise experience. The benefit of travel in this combined group manner is experiencing life outside of the inner city has proven to be immeasurable. This format serves as true bridging of the generation gap and bridging the gap between police and community as they share in travel experiences together.

Hang Time Mobile invites members of it’s sister organization Her Time an all women’s support group to participate as well as the youth mentoring organizations Community Hands And Mentoring Program (CHAMP) and Mentoring Youth Thru Arts And Gaming (MYTAG). The youth programs are aimed at mentoring urban youth and providing anti-violence messaging thru alternate ideas of interest of youth. The most powerful exchanges impacting the Bridgeport community is the members of once rival groups and current rivals being together in an educational forum where they live and learn as one group. These travel experiences can and have shut down conflicts that could have developed into street violence but were thwarted due to positive exposure to real people being people and not just a negative group affiliation.

Each trip will include, tours of historic sites, museums, arts & entertainment events, cultural events and educational institutions.

Upcoming Hang Time Mobile trips are:

March 24, 2018: Philadelphia (Liberty Bell)

May 19, 2018: Boston (State House, Freedom Trail)

August 24, 2018: Virginia (Gettysburg)

October 20, 2018: Rhode Island (Vanderbilt & Rockefellers' Mansions)

December 8, 2018: Salem Mass (Witch, Pilgrim)

  • All mobile group sessions will be conducted just as the routine sessions at home base.
  • Each trip will be chaperoned by Hang Time/Her Time & CHAMPS Staff with 2 Guest Law Enforcement persons. Two separate buses will travel together (youth/adult).
  • Trips are designed for youth between 15 yrs. – 18 yrs. with a minimum of 4 Adult chaperones. Adult Hang Time participants 19 yrs. -55 yrs. travel in separate bus.
  • There will be no trip fee for those participants approved by staff to attend
  • Water & snacks will be provided on bus. Lunch and/or dinner is at the expense of the travelers unless sponsors pick up food & beverage cost.
  • All trips will depart between 6:30 – 8:30 AM and return by 10:00 PM on the same day (Sat.)
  • There will be one (1) annual overnight trip.

The concept of researching, viewing and discussing a location as a group on Tue. then actually being there on that Saturday touring that same location can be transformative. A fresh new take on history lessons and group sessions!
