Greater Cleveland Harm Reduction Group
Hello, my name is Michelle. I am starting a project outside of Cleveland, Ohio in the suburbs. Not only am I a nurse and paramedic, but I am a recovering substance abuser who wants to empower others. The project is Greater Cleveland Harm Reduction Group. Our program is designed for prevention (blood-borne illness such as HIV and Hepatitis), education (addiction resources), and advocacy. We train our advocates with our own curriculum that helps them keep themselves safe, and it keeps the client safe as well.
Once a client receives prevention tools, they will ask about recovery (once a relationship is built). We connect them with a triage phone line. It asks basic demographics, first name only, at risk questions, and veteran status. After the information is obtained, the call taker will pair them up with an advocate. Usually same-sex or opposite sex depending on orientation to keep the client safe.
This is an exciting program as it is one of the first to target middle to upper class citizens, although no one is turned down. Drug use is more prevalent in these areas (suburbs). Stigmas will tell us that drug use is just in the "city." In fact, this is incorrect. Data shows drug use is more prevalent in the suburbs.
The money will be used towards educational resources, website building, cirriculum building, prevention tools, administrative costs, and most of all helping others.
The community thanks you!!
