02/21/2017Thanks for putting this all together, and thanks especially for making diversity and inclusion prominent themes in our local March. The scientific community benefits from the contributions of people from all walks of life. We are at our best when ALL of

This fund will contribute to the costs associated with the organization of the March for Science in Santa Barbara, a satellite march to the many taking place on April 22, 2017.
The March for Santa Barbara mission statement is as follows: The March for Science is a celebration of our passion for science and a call to support and safeguard the scientific community. Recent policy changes have caused heightened worry among scientists, and the incredible and immediate outpouring of support has made clear that these concerns are also shared by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Mischaracterization of science as a partisan issue, which has given policymakers permission to reject overwhelming evidence, is a critical and urgent matter. We also want to emphasize the importance of science and math education in training a globally competitive workforce and the importance of a general scientific understanding in our society. It is time for people who support scientific research and evidence-based policies to take a public stand and be counted. We seek to bring attention to these issues through a positive celebration of science.
This is a non-partisan issue that reaches far beyond people in the STEM fields and should concern anyone who values empirical research and science. This is a peaceful demonstration for spreading awareness, voicing concerns, and networking activists.
At the March for Science, we are committed to highlighting, standing in solidarity with, and acting as allies with black, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islander, indigenous, non-Christian, women, people with disabilities, poor, gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, trans, non-binary, agender, and intersex scientists and science advocates. We must work to make science available to everyone and encouraging individuals of all backgrounds to pursue science careers, especially in advanced degrees and positions. A diverse group of scientists produces increasingly diverse research, which broadens, strengthens, and enriches scientific inquiry, and therefore, our understanding of the world.
Thank you for your support of this important effort. Funds are needed to secure a starting location and sound equipment necessary for speakers as well as permits. Any money raised in excess of our need to make this march as impactful as possible will be donated to a non-profit for the advancement of science and science education.
