My name is Behrgen Prange Smith and I am a sixteen year old high school sophomore in Sturgeon Bay, WI. I have long had an interest in Medicine with a particular interest in Infectious Diseases. I am interested in an interning opportunity with Project Abroad Medicine internship in Tanzania which offers high school and college students the opportunity to work with both small health clinics and large government hospitals. This is a unique opportunity to work in a variety of different departments alongside local doctors and nurses working with patients who have a wide range of illnesses. In addition to helping provide care and emotional support, I would be offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain firsthand insight to the area of study I wish to pursue after graduation.
The facilities within the hospitals and clinics are basic and treatments are often not the standard expected here in the United States. In fact, there are warnings to volunteers that some cases are in fact shocking. This medical outreach would offer me the opportunity to help carry out the vital information and care to the disadvantaged communities. I would be staying with a local Tanzanian host family while working in the hospital or clinics.
The cost of the program is expensive and I am raising funds via kind.fund.com as well as through part-time employment, odd jobs, etc. to help make this opportunity come true. I appreciate your support. As a young person, I am working hard to make my contribution in the world through this project and your financial contribution is equally important.
