The Middle Georgia AIDS Network (MGAN), Inc. is a 501(c)3 charity committed to providing comprehensive support to persons living with HIV/AIDS, delivering community education and advocacy, free HIV counseling & testing, and reducing the incidence of HIV infection in the Middle Georgia (U.S.) area.
We serve the 13-county area of Georgia’s North Central Health District: Macon-Bibb, Houston, Peach, Jones, Crawford, Monroe, Jasper, Putnam, Baldwin, Hancock, Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Washington Counties.
We provide free HIV tests, currently using Oraquick HIV 1/2 Antibody oral swab tests, and work in partnership with other community-based organizations and local colleges in an effort to support the National HIV/AIDS Strategy Indicator 1- to increase the percentage of those with HIV who are aware of their serostatus to 90% by 2020. Our efforts are targeted primarily toward those most at risk— young men of color; although no one is excluded from the services we offer, regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, creed, or gender identity.
Those who test positive for HIV receive risk reduction counseling to minimize the likelihood of virus transmission. They are also linked to state agencies for confirmatory testing and linkage to life-sustaining healthcare services as required. Those who test negative for HIV receive risk reduction counseling, which includes regular testing, to increase the likelihood that they will remain HIV-negative.
We currently use a modified 1996 Chevrolet recreational vehicle as a CLIA-waived mobile laboratory, in which we perform free HIV tests at health fairs and targeted testing events throughout the community. The RV was graciously purchased by the late Johnny Fambro, the former director of our predecessor organization, Central City AIDS Network, prior to his untimely death. The funds were donated in memory of the late Mrs. Harold Katner.
Primarily due to its age, costs of maintaining and operating the mobile lab are increasing, and we know the vehicle will not last much longer. We are seeking income to cover some of the current operating costs of the RV— especially insurance and repairs— and to begin a capital fund for the purchase of another RV as soon as possible, so the one we are currently struggling to maintain can be retired.
Funds to cover insurance and repairs are needed NOW. $10,000 of the goal will more than adequately cover repairs and insurance for one year. The remaining $90,000 of the goal will be allocated to a capital fund to purchase a new RV/mobile lab. Early next year (2019), we will reassess our needs and begin our search for an actual replacement mobile lab. Based on the availability of funds, we will attempt to purchase a vehicle that will enable us to continue our mission through 2020 and beyond- in continued support of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy.
Won’t you please help us? Won’t you please join us in our efforts to end the epidemic? Keep us busy in our communities!
Any and all donations, regardless of size, are greatly appreciated and tax deductible. Thank you, in advance, for your kindness and generosity
